Above The Ether is a novel by the talented writer Eric Barnes. It is the story that features a climatic change and the effects of that on the world. The author already completed similar novels and this book is the prologue of his previous novel ‘’The City Where We Once Lived’’. Eric tried to prove his exceptional thinking style in this story too and he portrayed it well enough to make it worth reading.

The story represents people who are facing inevitable climatic catastrophe and managing to cope up with its effects in their lives. Some are living with their incomplete families regretfully and some are searching for their missing relatives. The story surrounds the people living with insecurities, isolation, financial crisis and the one in common, exploiting those who are weaker and more vulnerable.
The story follows six characters that are living and barely surviving in a catastrophic land that just experienced a climatic change. It features a father and his children running away from the tsunami after the earthquake attacked the Gulf. The regretful parents of a dead boy who died with addiction while the wildfire slowly coming closer to burn their home. About an investor who invests in crops, property and infrastructure.
A doctor and his wife who were trapped in the immigrant camp, the man who gives a ride in the carnival and the restaurant’s manager, all waiting for their fate. Coincidently they meet all in a city that already fights for survival. The system failed to protect the civilians and the new destruction daily flashes on the news channels with the different pictures of the victims and the devastated land. The story is all about the inescapable fear of death that can approach them and wipe them off the world by just a fierce storm.
If you are a climate fiction reader then this is a must-buy novel that is based upon the struggle of the people for their survival. The destruction that the world’s climatic change brought in their lives is inevitable the way people are trying to escape. The feeling of desperation and the fear of death are deeply explained in this novel which displays the specialty of Eric Barnes. I rated it as 6 out of 10 because I am not a lover of climate fiction but if you are then this book will keep you interested until the end.
