Review and Summary of Science Fiction Novel Attentatet i Pålsjö skog

***Warning Spoilers Below This Point***

Attentatet i Pålsjö skog translates in English to Attack in Pålsjö Forest. It presents an alternative history novel published in 1996 in Swedish. The story starts when a group of Swedish communists blew up a German train which travelling towards Sweden, resulting in the mass murder of hundreds of German Soldiers. This leads to unrest in the German population resulting in invasion by a furious Adolf Hitler. Because of this invasion, Sweden surrenders on the 12th of May 1941.

The Germans arrest The Prime Minister of Sweden named Per Albin Hansson but most of the parliamentarians successfully escape. The escaped officers establish an exile government in London. King Gustav V decided to surrender after his arrest and Prince Gustav VI Adolf becomes the King. He is already safe in London. Some Jews receive help from Sweden by Raoul Wallenberg.

One of the controversial parts of the book is that it mentions various big names who collaborated with Germans. Per Olof Sundman, who is an author, and Ingvar Kamprad, who is an IKEA founder heads local SS groups. Other significant personalities support new rulers. Sven Olov Lindholm becomes a Quisling like the leader of Sweden under occupation. The chaos in Sweden results in the postponement of Operation Barbarossa, for over three weeks. This delay gives Stalin time for achieving better defence, which leads to the downfall of Germany. The September Allied Invasion of Normandy happened instead of June. World War II finishes in Europe on 28th December 1944, after the suicide of Adolf Hitler.

Northern Sweden receives freedom after the end of World War II and history normalises again. The killing of four million Jews forms part of the core message in the book.
