Review and Summary of Science Fiction Novel Forever Free

***Warning Spoilers Below This Point***

The main lead of the story William Mandella lives with his wife Marygay in the icy world Middle Finger, which is a planet of the Mizar system. Mandella and other Forever War veterans are not satisfied with the condition of society. Hence they decide to move forward in time with the help of dilation of interstellar travel. They plan to travel for a period of 10 subjective years at a relative speed, which will take 40,000 earth years on the Middle Finger. Mandella and the people who travel including the Forever War veterans as well as the disenchanted humans of Middle Finger believe the situation will become better in time. Since they travel in the future, they need consent from Man, who is the posthuman group mind, and Tauran race, who is the alien group consciousness. However, they are not granted the permission and they end up hijacking the ship.

Mandella and Marygay move away from the planet. After they make their way out, they find that many unexplained things start to happen. Mysteriously the ship started to lose antimatter. Hence they abandon the ship and come back home. Although they planned to travel 40,000 earth years, they return only after 24 years. Upon their return, they find out that the Middle Finger is still intact but it is vacant and there is no sign of population. Everything and every person from the planet disappeared at the same time as that of the incident which happened on the ship. They plan to return to earth and investigate the matter.

During investigations, they find out that a shape-shifting is being poised as an android cowboy at a western-themed amusement park. This figure remained on earth and other inhabited planets without discovering where it originates from. The being also had no idea as to what happened to the inhabitants of the earth.

The events lead to further investigation and it was discovered that the resolution involved one of the gods who created the universe as his experiment. He explains that the act of leaving galaxy and planet for more than 40,000 years round trip is the same as a lab mouse trying to escape his cage. The god then restores all the inhabitants which were stored in stasis.
