Review and Summary of Science Fiction Novel From the New World

***Warning Spoilers Below This Point***

From the New World focuses on dark fantasy, fiction, and young adult novels. The author set the novel in a post-modern world abnormal in every perspective the humans, animals and even the environment is atypical.

Part 1

The novel sets after 1000 years from the modern era in a village of Japan- Kamisu 66. The world became ruled and dominated by humans possessing superpowers like telekinesis, telepathy, and different psychic abilities. The story revolves around the lives of a group of teenagers who met each other in a psychic school and became friends. The main protagonist of this novel is a 12-year-old- girl named Saki Watanabe.

Her friends are Satoru Asahina (a playful boy always teasing and arguing with Saki), Maria Akizuki (a cheerful girl), Mamoru Itou (a shy boy), and Shun Aonuma (a mysterious and charming boy whom Saki admires). They developed the special school for psychic children to evaluate them and to remove those who are useless or fraudsters.

They forget the removed children from society as the authorities delete their memories from the community and the minds of people. The story begins when Saki and her friends came across a False Minoshiro (a mythical animal). The Minoshiro tells them about the past, of how these superpowers changed and how this society came into being.

In 2013, only 0.3% of the human population develops some telekinetic capabilities as it grew further they use it for violence and crime. This unconscious and conscious state of power and violence created chaos, wars, and eventually the downfall of modern society.

To establish peace and control these supernatural powers, they modified themselves with the help of bio-engineering. It mutates the genetic makeup so that if any psychic human kills another human, an attack inhibition mechanism starts. It signals negative feedback in the attacker’s body to shut down all his organs, activating death within him.

They designed some mutated animals like Monster Rats (mutated from human DNA) capable of speaking the human language. It lives in a society ruled by queens and some kind of feline impure cats that were used to kill those children born with dangerous capabilities of psychosis.

These include the Karmic Demons (psychics unable to control their powers) and the Ogres (who can overpower the death feedback mechanism and can kill humans). This part ends when the children became caught by Monk Rigin. Rigin is a priest that seals away the psychic powers of children who disobeys the rules. But later the rogue Monster Rat and Saki killed him, and the rogue rat colony captured Satoru.

Part 2

This part continues after 2 years when Saki and her friends reach adolescence. They believe that the government does not know about their rebellious past adventure. This part involves the death of Shun. They isolate him in an abandoned house because of his Karmic Demon powers.

Just before he kills himself he tells Saki that the government knows everything about their transgression. Later, the Squealer killed Maria and Mamoru. For this act; they name him Yakomaru by the humans and became the false Minoshiro of the Robber Fly colony replacing their queen.

Part 3

In this part, the lives of Saki and Satoru takes major turns full of adventures. The 26-year-old Saki now works for the village government in Mutant Management Department. During this time Yakomaru gained more power by destroying and dominating other colonies, including the Giant Hornet colony. Finally, attacking the village of Kamisu 66 with the help of an Ogre (later revealed as the child of Maria and Mamoru, raised by Yakomaru after killing his parents).

Yakomaru aims to capture more human psychic children to create an army so he can wipe out all humans. Saki and Satoru ask help from Kiroumaru. He agrees on the pact that after the revolt ends, they will protect his colony from human retaliation. He attacks the Ogre disguising as a human.
