Review, Synopsis, and Summary of the Novel Naughts and Crosses

Malorie Blackman’s book Naughts and Crosses was voted as one of the UK’s most loved books. An award-winning author, the book’s storyline explore racism with a twist, i.e. white people on the receiving end of the prejudice and also the significant consequences it can have for the society. A delightful read, with the magic of her eloquent words visible, this book has a lot to offer. It’s a story based on politics and the differences between different societies based on their privileges. Two friends Sephy and Callum, who became friends by chance, fell in love and then apart. The story revolves around their lives.

Review and Summary of the Dystopian Novel Naughts and Crosses

***Warning Spoilers Below This Point***

Sephy is a daughter of a privileged senior politician Kamal Hadley. She is a cross, dark-skinned member of the society who enjoys all the privileges of an upper-class race. On the other side, the author describes another main character, Callum. He is a Naught, white-skinned and member of the society who is supposed to serve the Crosses.

Callum’s mother used to work as a nanny at Zephyr’s house. Callum and Sephy undeterred by the prejudice surrounding them became close friends. They did not know that their friendship will have severe consequences for their future lives. As the years went by, their friendship continued, despite all the odds against them. Sephy was very happy that Callum got admitted in her prestigious school. Even at school, Sephy was determined to show that she was acquainted with Callum publicly. Despite all the hatred they had to face, they continued to side with each other.

Callum’s father and brother decided to join the terrorist army which focused on the destruction of Crosses. This decision shattered Callum’s life. His sister’s suicide left him totally devastated because his family was now involved in terrorist activities. Callum also got blamed for being a part of it and was dragged into this drama.

Sephy became saddened by all that was happening around her decision to leave and started a new life. She asked Callum to join her when she was leaving for higher studies, but Callum received her message after she was gone.

After years of separation, when they finally met, they realised that the love they had for each other was so strong that it did not diminish and could not be denied any longer. In a strange turn of events, Callum again found himself involved in terrorist activities for which he had to pay dearly. Even though his intentions were pure for Sephy, he couldn’t deny the forces, which led him to do terrible acts.

Their love story hurled them into a menacing world of terror with irrefutable consequences. Will, their baby, suffer or will their love triumph is a question readers are left with in the end.

Final Thoughts on the Novel Naughts and Crosses

Through her writing, Malorie Blackman has highlighted how racism and prejudice can affect people’s lives significantly. She has turned the tables around and tried to portray a different angle on racism. It is a gripping read which will glue you till the end. I will rate it at 8/10 as I immensely enjoyed reading it.
