It sets the novel on the future planet Mars where the society becomes divided into different castes based on colours. The most powerful is The Golds who rule the society, they destine The Greys to provide security, and it means the Pinks must provide entertainment and pleasure services.
Reds are the lowest class. The high Reds serve as labourers and the low Reds are miners who mine Helium-3 to make Mars a livable place. The story starts with ‘’Darrow’’ who is a red, desperate to get the Laurel. Darrow is an angry young man who has a lot of rage for society. They cheat him out of the Laurel he desperately wants to get. There he realises that society became biased.
Eo‘s wife sings a protest song and hanged. He buries her body earmarked as a crime but he wakes up in the Red rebel’s cell wondering what may happen next. They transform his body into the Golds. He tries to integrate with the arrogant class and receive the skills to rescue his people.
Pierce Brown is a successful and creative writer. I appreciate the incredible world-building and characterisation that makes the novel a must-read.
This debut novel contains good and interesting content. The storyline offers one of a kind, combining action-packed and suspense-filled science fiction with the dystopian setting. I rated the novel 8.5 out of 10 leaving me waiting for the next novel.
