Review, Synopsis and Summary of the Novel “Among the Free”

Among the free, the last and final of the Shadow series written by the famous Margaret Peterson Haddix. Once again, it takes us back to the narrative of Luke Garner, the main protagonist in the whole series. He had been hiding in the “population police“, under a façade being on their side. But in reality, he was looking for an opportunity for a rebellion against them for a long time. His chance unexpectedly came when he was offered to accompany a sergeant. On a minor operation of handing out fake ids to the villagers when they reached there, the villagers started opposing them, especially an elderly woman. The sergeant instructed Luke to kill her, but he did not and escaped from there.

Synopsis and summary of the Science Fiction Novel “Among the Free".

Luke, without thinking and planning, his running away proved to be a starting point for a movement against the population police. He knew that by doing this, he has let to the secret and would now be hunted down by the police. In the hope of finding refuge and safety, he went to a nearby village. To his surprise, he was warmly welcomed by the villagers who had now learned a lesson that by cooperating with Luke, they have a better chance of survival. With their cooperation, he managed to escape the police once again. As he roamed further and wandered into other villages and he was shocked to hear that the population has finally been defeated. But the story was not as simple as it seemed.

After coming into the public, he realized that the former bodyguard of Smits Grant Oscar and the police force leader were using the shadow children and their families to their advantage. They have blamed all the atrocities done by the police force on these illegal children.

Luke bravely decided that it was time to take drastic action or lose it would be too late. He came on the news channel publicly and with the help of this news anchor, he aired his interview where he recounted his and all of his friends as he came out and spoke the truth and the people believed him about the dark plans of Oscar and his ally. At last, the shadow children go the freedom they deserved and would be able to live their lives openly as desired.

Final thoughts on the science Fiction Novel ‘”Extras”.

A highly anticipated novel being the finale of this series it lives up to its expectation. Margaret Haddix has expertly brought the whole book to a different end, leaving no loose ends. The truth and bravery triumphs in the end, and it’s a superb piece of writing. While having high expectations, it is bound to have some flaws because they are challenging to meet. At times the readers feel that the author is losing grip on the story or it is wavering off of the track. However, it does not very a huge impact overall. I would highly recommend this book to end the series.
