Article 5 is a young adult fiction revolving around dystopian post-war America, written by Kristen Simmons. This novel is the first instalment of the series and features Ember Miller and Chase Jennings who want to get rid of the Government. The novel is interesting and frightening. It depicts America as a terrifying and aggressive state where civil liberty has been eliminated and the military has come into power promoting religious fanaticism and aggression. The background of this dystopian state has been described very well in this novel.

***Warning Spoilers Below This Point***
It is the futuristic novel set in post-war America where the nation is greened by the military and the civil liberty is no more. The Moral statutes are imposed on the people and there are a lot of restrictions on the public. No religion can be observed other than Christianity, Lavish lifestyle is not acceptable and the sinful women are banished.
Ember’s mother was also being banished due to the fact that she committed a crime of violating article 5 because she was single and gave birth to a child that was not allowed in society. Ember was sent to the camp of girls that constituted all the illegitimate female children like her. She wants to get rid of the Military rule and the cruel headmistress who beats and kills the girls who disobey them.
Ember wants to escape to find her mother back. In the meanwhile. Her ex-boyfriend Chase comes to rescue her. Initially, she is unable to trust Chase but Chase, throughout the novel, proved to her several times, his faithfulness. He sacrifices his reputation, his career, and even his life to save Ember.
The vision of the state looks really frightening and truthful that the reader can consider it as real. The dystopian setting is truly amazing that compels you to proceed with the novel. However, there are few missteps and inconsistencies as well that make this novel a frustrating read. The characterization of Ember is quite irritating. Sometimes, she acts quite foolishly making the character very silly. She often runs away from Chase, who is her only saviour. I don’t know why at times she behaves so idiotically. Moreover, both of the protagonists have fallen in silent love that they never talk about their emotions. Love should not be so implied in such kind of novel. Overall, the novel is not-so-recommended because of its weak characterization and some of the silly instances it depicts, reducing the enjoyment too much therefore I rated it 5 out of 10.
