“Asphalt” is a masterpiece written by the famous Carl Hancock Rux who is not just a great performance artist and vocalist but a poet, playwright, and visionary artist. His exceptional skills have helped him in bringing out such a brilliantly written piece of literature. The way he has shown his writing skills in this novel is beyond imagination. This book explores reality all too well.

***Warning Spoilers Below This Point***
Asphalt like the word itself is a story about the deep and dark reality of life. Lives of people after the war in New York City and how their deep down darkness turns around and proves to be the supporting system for them. It’s a story of a few people and how despite having completely different interests and lives they end up being so attached to each other based on their sorrows.
Racine, who is a young man somehow develops his interest in music and plans to become a professional DJ and heads to Paris to learn it all. When he completes his studies and returns home, he is called by a company to be the lyricist and producer and they give him an opportunity to produce is own music but unfortunately, this was not his cup of tea.
He heads to New York City and there he meets Manny who is an absolutely weird guy but he wins his heart with his honesty and friendship. Manny is someone who is weird in every way but what amazes Racine is how Manny is loved by women.
Couchette also comes in the list of people who amazed Racine and won his heart. The reasons were though quite different. Couchette had past and his personal life was nothing but a rollercoaster but what kept them all going was their friendship.
Carl Hancock Rux is definitely someone who has given English Literature a great novel. A novel that has a lot of emotional values and the way it is written is truly special. However, I believe this story could have been a little more in-depth. The characters were very well described but the story somehow lacked its essence. Maybe if the story was a little longer then it could have been much better described but apart from that, it’s an amazing novel and a must-read for everyone who loves literature. I have personally given it an 8.5 rating and I will definitely read it again at some point.
