House of the scorpion is written by the famous fiction writer Nancy Farmer, and like all other of her works, it does not disappoint. It was published in the year 2002 and baffled everyone who read the book showcasing how tactfully the author has tackled social issues along with a scientific angle to the storyline. Based in Mexico, Matteo is on a hunt to find the real culprits behind the spread of a deadly drug.

Synopsis and Summary of the Novel “House of Scorpions”

The story of the novel revolves around Matteo, a young clone of a very fierce and tyrannical drug lord El Patron. Growing up in a fictional country, Opium, which separates us from former Mexico, Matteo did not know anything about his true identity. As time passes, Matteo comes term to term with the harsh reality of his life. He had been solely created to donate his organs to the drug lord so that he could live longer. He could not believe the cruel trick that fate had played with him. He refused to believe that all the care that he received was just to serve their lethal purpose.

Full of hatred and resentment, Matteo decided to fight back and end the trial of a crime which he never committed. He makes an escape plan with his girlfriend, Marie, but he was not successful. As the story moves forward, Matt’s bodyguard helped him to escape this dangerous world. After running away from Opium, he got caught in the company of ‘lost boys’. There they were very badly treated after suffering for a long time. Matt had had enough. He led a rebellion against the wrongdoers and became a hero for the orphan boys.

Soon after this, he returns to his own country, only to find that El patron rule has ended due to the whole family being dead. El patron could not bear that everyone else had alive except him, so he arranged for everyone to get poisoned at the party. Matteo then became the ruler of his country to destroy the barbaric rule of the drug lord.

Final thoughts on the Novel “House of scorpions”.

Nancy Farmer has written a fascinating story which captivated her audience for sure. She has beautifully portrayed human emotions, along with the scientific elements of the main character. But as with every novel, it has some drawbacks too. The ending was quite abrupt, and some of the characters were quite blurry in the storyline. Apart from this, it is very good, and the author has struck a very good balance in tackling social issues without being turned into a sermon.
