Synopsis and Summary of Dystopian Novel In the Country of Last Things

Anna Blume, a young woman, has written a letter, which is the story of this novel. Anna writes this letter as she enters into a city that is impacted by the disorder. Most of the population of this city collects garbage in order to re-sell it and earn living. There are no working industries in the city. Anna has come into this city in order to find her brother William Blume, who is a journalist by profession. These siblings belong to the eastern world, which is well developed and has not collapsed, unlike this city.

Samuel Farr has been sent to the city by William’s editor for finding William. Anna enters this city with William’s address, another address and a picture for Samuel Farr. Later she finds out that the place where her brother once lived was demolished and now that area is just rubble. Anna starts object hunting in the streets, which is different than collecting general waste as she has to scavenge for specific items.

Isabel, another object hunter becomes a friend of Anna, when Anna saves her life. This lady, although is an older woman, still has a vast knowledge about where to find the objects of requirement. Isabel’s husband Ferdinand is a rude man and tries to rape Anna. Anna strangles him and lets him go before he dies. However, when in the morning Anna wakes up, she finds out that Ferdinand has died and it is indicated that Isabel might have killed him. Both the ladies threw his body from the roof, indicating that he has committed suicide. Later Isabel dies and housebreakers arrive at the apartment making Anna homeless again.

Events lead to Anna escaping from a police officer and entering in to a library, where her luck takes her to Samuel. Both of them fall in love and start living together. As the story unfolds, Anna gets pregnant, which is later miscarried and while these events take place, Samuel is lost.

Anna starts working at Woburn house where she finds Victoria, who is the daughter of Dr. Woburn. Anna starts developing feelings for her and both of them end up in a love affair. This relationship helps Anna recovering from the loss of Samuel. Later she finds Samuel during an interview. Events lead to Anna, Samuel, Victoria and Boris leaving this city for a better future.
