Pretties by Scott Westerfeld is the second sequel in the Uglies trilogy and show us a different version of Tally’s world. With the first book ending on Tally giving herself up to join the experiment and find a cure for the Pretties, this book starts by showing that Tally transformed into a Pretty and forgot the reasoning behind it. The story goes on to tell us that Tally adapted significantly well to her new lifestyle. She became best friends with Shay and Peris again. She also joined a group called Crims. Pretties is the new name of the Uglies, and now they are described as Rebels.

Pretties representative of the former Uglies were rebelling against the government. Even though it seemed that Tally is happy, she and her friends still try to return to their previous state because they realised that they were more in control of themselves.
When Tally met Zane, another Crim member she started realising that there was more to her life than just being pretty. He recounted her previous experiences with the Smokies, which made Tally receive some of her memories back. She, along with Zane, took the medicines to cure them but the two medications work, only if mixed together and not divided. They made a colossal mistake ending in both of them not being fully cured.
Tally after getting some of her memory back wandered on an almost impossible and unlikely journey of finding the location of the new Smoke. During her trip, she encountered many adventures and people who were confined in a village and experimented upon to reduce their violence. When she was presiding in the village, David discovered and saved her. He took her to the new Smoke.
Soon after she arrived at the Smoke, a realisation hit her that when Zane went to the hospital to get himself checked he had a tracker inserted in him. The tracker informs government of his whereabouts and also Tally’s location. Tally decided to run away with David following her. She went back to Zane, with the aim to save David before she gets caught. To protect David, Tally informed Zane that she never had a relationship with him.
This sequel gives an exciting and complex dimension to the series. The author introduced several new characters and examined in depth the natures of two previous ones; namely Shay and Peris. Apart from this, the book refrain to focus on some of the main characters. Generally I experienced a little disappointment in the storyline but I still feel the book deserves a 7 out of 10 rating.
