Review, Synopsis, and Summary of the Dystopian Novel Riddley Walker

Russell Hoban’s 1980 dystopian novel with its bold and daring imagination takes us on an epic trip to a post-apocalyptical England. In a now desolate world, we follow 12-year-old Riddley Walker through his journey to uncovering some insights into the creation and destruction of the world that used to be. With his fractured language, he tells his story while trying his best to make sense of the new and thriving world.

Synopsis and Summary of the Dystopian Novel Riddley Walker

***Warning Spoilers Below This Point***

2000 years after a nuclear war, the world as we know it no longer exists. All that’s left is a desolate civilization with a language, hardly discernable, but good enough for communication.

Riddley Walker, a young boy of 11 receives a dedicated name on his 12th birthday, a sign that he is old enough to be a man.  Three days after his naming ceremony, Riddley’s father dies in an accident. Subsequently, Riddley is forced to take up his father’s mantle a little too early. In that same year, he begins his special duty as the ‘Connexion Man’ interpreting meaning and events in what is left of his community. Soon, however, Riddley finds out about a plot to recreate the same thing that led to the destruction of their world. He is determined to stop this from happening. Bold, brave Riddley sets out with a pack of wild dogs into the unknown and tries his best to save the world.

First, Riddley begins by trying to find and rescue a young man from a dungeon, after which he continues his adventure to Cambry. Through his journey, he uncovers many historical resources and truths. Riddley needs to hold these truths dearly if he is to save the world from the second period of destruction.

Final Say on the Dystopian Novel Riddley Walker

It is not surprising that Russell Hoban’s delightful book won the Nebula Award in 1981 as well as the John W. Campbell prize two years after being published. His critically acclaimed book deserves all the praise. However, it can be hard for most new readers to read. But here’s a tiny tip: When you start reading Riddley Walker, it might take a while before you settle into the language flow. When you do, you will discover how epic Riddley’s journey is and you won’t be able to stop appreciating Hoban’s book until you reached the end.
