Review, Synopsis, and Summary of the Novel “Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron’’

“Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron” written by the famous writer Jasper Fforde presents an unusual and unthinkable story based on our society and its class system. Jasper Fforde achieved justice with this story as he wrote each part with perfection. In the first part i.e. The road to High Saffron, he explains how the lower classes receive fewer opportunities and how unprivileged they become to participate in things that the higher-status people or ranks can easily do.

Review and Summary of the Dystopian Novel “Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron’’

***Warning Spoilers Below This Point***

Eddie is a man from the future. The time where nothing resembles today and life turned out to be classified on the basis of a societal classes system. People divided into different types based on their statuses and Eddie, unfortunately, being from a lower class face the consequences which in his case relates to his ability to see Grey only.

The life for the underprivileged becomes hard and they continue to pay a significant amount to gain access to basic needs and doing all of it while seeing the world from just one colour. People around him consist of the same capabilities and they go through a particularly difficult condition especially after sunset as they can’t see anything and their lives become stressful.

Eddie works for an agency who specialises in the manipulation of colours and there he met Rose who later turns out to be his life partner. He opens up to her about his troubles and she advises him to think differently. She helps him in finding out the root cause of the difficulty and together they stand against people who aim to control them.

Final Thoughts on the Dystopian Novel “Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron’’

Jasper Fforde published a very light humorous and thoughtful story. The story defines many challenges the world face today and how these difficulties may look in the future. It presents an interesting read if you hold an imaginative mind that allows you to comprehend the storyline. Still, I give the book a 7.5 out of 10 because of the efforts demonstrated to explain the imaginative events and I will definitely read it again.
