Juliette Ferrars killed a young boy three years earlier and for this reason, she lives in an asylum that reached 264 days. Her deadly touch also involves drawing energy from other organic beings, leaving her uncomfortable in her own skin and the situation dangles on the edge of insanity. In Juliette’s loneliness, she keeps a notebook that allows her to share her thoughts and feelings.
Adam Kent joins the enclosure as Juliette’s cellmate and they form somewhat of a bond while she shows him the ropes of the asylum. Following some relationship and world-building, the all-powerful Reestablishment experiences outside influences, effectively a one-world government situation. Adam’s superior Warner offers a deal and allows Juliette to leave the asylum in exchange for undertaking enhanced interrogation of the Reestablishment regime’s prisoners.
Juliette forced to undertake inhumane acts leave her ethical side compromised. Adam and Juliette, develop an intimate relationship amid the challenges she encounters while it becomes apparent that Adam experiences no side effects when touched by Juliette. Adam following some difficulties helps Juliette to escape, however on the way out she brushes against Warner who also seems unharmed by her touch.
Following the escape, the love story evolves, however, the Reestablishment who implemented torture on one of Adam’s kin discover his and Juliette’s location. They try and formulate a plan; unfortunately, both Adam and Juliette end up captured. Following Juliette’s daring approach during the capture, they escape again. They also receive some hope when one of their peers who belong to the Omega Point secret society rebels against the regime.
I rate the story 7.6 out of 10 because of the interesting reading material it presents. The author Tahereh Mafi tested the boundaries with this book, however by the end it’s quite apparent she sets the book up to form part of a series. For sure it’s a solid and pleasant read and one I enjoyed spending time on, would I re-read this novel? No. Am I glad I read it? Yes.
