Review, Synopsis, and Summary of the Novel “Specials”

Specials by Scott Westerfeld forms part of the third book in the series of the Uglies. Pretties ended on the note of Tally becoming a Special. Specials present a distinctive class of Pretties with exceptionally different attributes. Pretties consist of no control over themselves and Specials, unlike the Pretties, became surgically programmed in such a way that they changed into strong beings, with sharp reflexes and a mind that works faster and better than normal humans.

Review and Summary of the Science Fiction Novel “Specials”

***Warning Spoilers Below This Point***

Mentally and physically enhanced by the surgeries coupled with a strong personality Tally became a specialist who belonged to the Cutters who were the very best in their race. They received special appointments and could not revert back to the Uglies even if they join the Smoke. In an attempt to uncover the new location of the Smoke, the Cutters disguised themselves and went to a party of Uglies, but the Uglies were ahead of them and knew about their plan beforehand.

The cutter’s plan backfired with one of their agents being caught by the Smokies. Tally learned that the Uglies hand out pills to cure the people and decided to target Zane. Tally decided to stay with Zane and prevent him from taking any medicines that may allow him to get well and change into a Speical. But Zane, still an ally of the Smokies at heart set out on a journey in the hope of finding the new Smoke. Tally followed him and learned that the new location of Smoke is in Diego. When she followed him to Diego, she was caught and then kept in security. As she was about to get the surgery done to cure her, Shay managed to free her, and they decided to run away.

The journey continues, and we learn that Shay and most of Tally’s other friends became cured and they decided to ask her to help them against the possible attack made on Diego by Dr Cable. He was the leader of the whole scientific approach which subsequently ruined mankind. Just as she left the city, she meets David, who gave her the cure and dropped the final decision on her. When she reached Dr Cable, she tricked him into inserting the cure into him so that all this madness can end.

Final thoughts on The Novel “Specials”

The idea of trust, expectations and sacrifice run throughout this well-executed book. Filled with just the right amount of thrill, action and adventure, it surely can’t be overlooked. Tally’s character development gets confusing as the book goes forward and her brain resets continuously, but the novel stays an interesting and phenomenal story.
