Review, Summary, and Synopsis of the Novel The City Of Ember

Jeanne DuPrau, a teacher editor and a technical writer had a passion for writing from a young age. The City of Ember a critically acclaimed book, the first part of the series offer an absorbing storyline. It accurately portrays the post-apocalyptic world the author set it in an imaginary city called “The City of Ember”. The city faces the danger of being wiped out from the face of the earth after 241 years.

The builders and architects who established this city left behind a manual of instructions for its residents. So they could move out of the city before it becomes destructed. Unfortunately, the last mayor of the city died before he could inform anyone about the whereabouts of the instruction box.

Lina May Fleet and Don Harrow, the two main characters, accidentally discovered the manual when they carried out their roles for a school function. Lina’s younger sister chews the instruction pages because she is teething and leaving them indecipherable. Following the two teenager’s mind-blowing and exciting journey to save the residents of the city before it was too late, the readers gain a grip over the world of fantasy, adventure and mystery.

They need to find out about the ways and routes that will allow the residents to safety, but their path is difficult. They face resistance from the government and the citizens themselves before they convince them of the truth and the extent of their looming dark future. With overcoming many obstacles, the duo finally escaped from the city and send a message to the remaining people of the city for safety. Will the people see the message and act accordingly?

Final thoughts on the Novel The City of Ember

The City of Ember, a highly acclaimed novel, transports us to a different world full of human persistence and efforts to make things right even if there is no hope left. It is a complete package of harrowing adventures, secret messages that needs decoding with an enthralling storyline. Because the novel was so good, it fascinated me until the end.
