Taurans an alien species experienced a discovery after an attack on the human colonist ships. William Mandela studies physics and assigns them for an elite task force of the United Nations Exploratory Force (UNEF). The task is to assemble forces for war against Taurans. They send ground troops of UNEF out to Taurans for revenge. All the recruits of the elite task force have an IQ of over 150.

They present highly educated people, who look physically healthy and mentally fit. These people receive exceptional training, first on Earth and then on another planet named Charon that occurs beyond Pluto. As there are extreme environments, most of the recruits of this ordering die. The new soldiers depart planet Earth to connect with them. They travel near light speed and have to bear with relativistic effects of time.

The first encounter with the Taurans start in the year 1997 and lasts for only two years. The soldiers return to Earth in 2024. The soldiers discover that Taurans equipped themselves with advanced weapons.

Mandella and Marygay Potter, who is a fellow soldier and his lover, come back to civilian life on Earth. They discover that humanity changed drastically in these years. He experiences difficulty to settle in this new society and discovers they encourage homosexuality to fight overpopulation. He and his other veteran soldiers re-enlist for the military after they struggle to adjust to this new world.

They are re-assigned to combat the command. With his luck, Mandella survives military service for four years, which are many centuries in real-time. He became the oldest surviving soldier of this war. The soldiers disliked Mandella after he forced them to learn 21st Century English to communicate with him.
