***Warning Spoilers Below This Point***
The story begins when a teenager revives his senses in a black metal box. He can’t recall anything other than his name Thomas. The doors of the metal elevator unlatch, revealing a farm surrounded by high walls. This place they call Glade delivers supplies each week by the same elevator. Beyond the high walls of the Glade is a maze home to horrifying monsters called Grievers.
A guy named Alby from Newt leads the Glade. Runners represent a group of people who goes outside to find a way out and led by Minho. Thomas befriends a guy named Chuck and faces an opponent, Gally. Later on, they bring a girl named Teresa to the Glade. Teresa told them that everything will change and keep making strange predictions. Thomas felt he shares a strange bond with her like he knows her before but she drifted into a coma.
The other day, Alby along with Minho goes to explore the dead Griever that Minho reported the previous day. The Gladers wander in the maze at night, so the doors close on its own. That night, before the doors close, Thomas spot Minho dragging the unconscious Alby. He runs to help them despite knowing the fact that he is breaking a rule of the Glade. The maze is most threatening at night because the creatures who haunt it becomes most active.
Luckily, somehow three of them survived the night in the maze, many regard them as heroes, and other doubts them. Gally accuses Thomas of being a spy of the creators. Thomas faces trials for breaking the rules and the Gladers place him in jail for a day. Teresa comes out of her coma and tells him he played some part in the maze’s building. Thomas felt guilty and depressed. He trains under Minho and learns from the runners how to find a way out of the maze.
The other day the sun didn’t rise, and the sky turned dark grey. That night, the doors of the Glade remain open. When the Grievers attack them, Gally intentionally throws himself on them but made an unexpected return. Meanwhile, they discover that a rival burned the maps of the maze. But luckily, those maps changed into bait to capture the traitor in the community. Thomas willingly gets stung by Grievers to know more about his past. After his recovery, he tells everyone that they forced Teresa and Thomas to aid the creators in building the maze. He told them that the cliff is the only way out and into the maze.
He leads a group of Gladers to the maze. Some of them died on their way to the cliff but Thomas, Teresa and Chuck make it to the cliff and jump into the hole beyond it. They punch the code into the computer and terminate the maze. The others follow them down and for the first time; they came face to face with the Creators and baffle to find out Gally was one with them. Gally took out a knife and point it to Thomas while Chuck came to protect his friend, ending up losing his life. Thomas feels heartbroken, and as a response beat Tally to death.
Suddenly, a group of rescuers breaks in and shot the woman and her supporters. They help the Gladers out of the maze. After that, they learn that humanity is at the mercy of Flare a disease. A woman tells them the solar flares destructed the earth while Thomas is now the only hope to rescue them. Rescuers transfer them to safe dormitories to issue them with proper supplies.
A memorandum states the Gladers formed part of an experiment to locate the resourceful children who may rescue the planet from this apocalypse.
I rate this novel 7 out of 10 because it presented a fast-paced adventure in an exceptionally dark and apocalyptic world. The story provides some mystery and rather suitable for Young readers. Would I re-read this novel? Yes. Am I glad I read it? Yes.
