‘’The Plot against America’’ is an autobiographical story of the novelist himself and his childhood days. It features Philip Roth and his family. President Lindbergh elected for president implements policies against the Jews. Philip and his parents move to Canada. This is to escape from the social challenges developing against their people. Philip and his family encounter Anti-Semitic discrimination and the event impacts on their daily lives.
All of Philip’s family becomes threatened by the new administration in different ways and leaves an adverse impact on Philip’s psychology. A civic organisation set-up by wealthy Jews offers disappointment and concerning outcomes.
The police display a troubling attitude towards the Jews mass massacre. Jewish kids withhold from attending school formed part of a non-official defence force. Phillip, unfortunately, involuntarily formed part of this group.
The storyline presented depressed and in-depth emotions. It is a masterpiece of counterfactual history that keeps you entangled in reality’s possible “what if’s”. The novel is a unique narrative and involves Roth’s predictions about his own childhood.
This novel is a must-read masterpiece. It is the combination of a child’s emotions and the society’s injustice that definitely makes a reader sentimental about the mercilessness of life at war. The book allows for interesting and thought-provoking reading. This is the reason I rated it 9 out of 10.
