The famous author H. G. Wells wrote the Science fiction story The Sleeper Awakes in 1899. This story describes a man who slept for two hundred and three years. When he woke up, London completely changed, and he became the richest man in the world. In the late 1960s, George Pal wanted to make a film out of this novel, but he heard that American International Pictures had the rights of the novel, so decided against it.

The theme of the novel focused on socialism, about the betrayal of the revolution, and how the elite society manipulates a population by the use of technology. The description of the novel bind the readers to read until the end of the book.
The story starts with the protagonist, Graham, an Englishman who lived in London during 1897. He suffered from insomnia, took a high dose of the drugs and falls into a coma. Graham woke up in 2100 and realised that he inherited huge wealth placed in a trust. He realised over time the government used his capital to establish an extensive political and economic world order. Graham apprehended that the entire world’s existence relied on his money.
He lived as a prisoner in his own house while seeing people use his money. People helped him escape from the place and rebelled against the White Council. Graham never wanted to do so, but he joined them to escape from the place. He discovered the group of the rebels and realised they want his money.
The Science Fiction novel, The Sleeper Awakes, left a huge impact on the readers. The storyline touched on the role of wealth and people’s attitude towards it. Also, the practice of manipulation by governmental authorities. I rate this novel, 7.1 out of 10. Would I re-read the novel? Yes. Am I glad I read it? Yes.
