Review and Summary of Science Fiction Novel Why Call Them Back From Heaven?

***Warning Spoilers Below This Point***

Immortality offers the supreme power to come back to life after death and live forever. This is the major element around which the whole novel revolves.

Simak sets up a future world of the year 2148. It presents a private corporation called The Forever Center. They gained control over the minds and thoughts of almost everyone in the world. This makes them believe that with the help of science they can provide them with another second life to become immortal. Whoever wants a chance at immortality has to constantly submit their earnings and all the possessions to the Forever Center. This is insurance for their second life, so they experience a luxurious and stable life after returning from death.

The brainwashed people in this system receive a perfect second life as promised by Forever Center. They initially experience deprived lives by succumbing their earnings to the Forever Center. The people carry transmitters in their bodies and whenever they die personnel from the Center preserve their bodies cryogenically.

Billions of people willfully die and the ones who died because of natural causes wait in the Center for another life. The population is drastically increasing. Still, many remain disloyal to this system. They include some Holy people who consider this as interference and violation of God’s plan and resign from this system. Others include people ostracised from the Center because of their crimes. They punish them by depriving them of being awarded another life.

The novel is about different characters living in this system. Daniel Frost is an executive in Forever Center, but because of a conspiracy, they excluded him. Ann Harrison, a woman who is an apostate lawyer who lost a case for a man named Franklin Chapman. The Center ostracised Chapman after he failed to collect a dead body after his van broke down. Mona Campbell is a scientist working at the Center and finds a dark truth about the Forever Center. The story is all about these characters struggling and exploring this system of the future world.
